GRANT PARK — Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii and Olivia Rodrigo are among the artists set to perform at this year’s Lollapalooza.

The festival announced its lineup Tuesday morning, which also includes Tyler, The Creator; RÜFÜS DU SOL; Luke Combs; TWICE; A$AP Rocky; Korn; Gracie Abrams; Dom Dolla; Djo and more. Lollapalooza is July 31-Aug. 4 in Grant Park.

 Roy Ayers, beloved for "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," dies at 84

Roy Ayers, the legendary vibraphonist, composer, and jazz-funk pioneer best known for “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” has died at 84.

According to a statement posted on his Facebook page, Ayers passed away Tuesday in New York City after a long illness.

Born on September 10, 1940, in Los Angeles to a musical family, Ayers’ journey seemed destined from the start. At just five years old, he danced with such enthusiasm at a Lionel Hampton concert that the iconic vibraphonist handed him his first set of mallets—a moment his parents described as receiving "spiritual vibes."

Ayers first made his mark in the 1960s Los Angeles hard-bop scene, but it was in the 1970s that he developed his signature sound. With his group Roy Ayers Ubiquity—named after his 1970 album Ubiquity—he blended funk grooves, soulful horns, smooth vocals, and jazz improvisation into a sound that perfectly captured the era's energy. Drawing influence from Miles Davis’ electric period, Ayers helped shape a movement with albums like He’s Coming (1971), Red, Black & Green (1973), and his memorable score for the Pam Grier-led blaxploitation film Coffy.

But it was his 1976 album Everybody Loves the Sunshine that solidified his place in music history. The title track, with its warm, hypnotic groove, became an enduring classic, sampled over 100 times and celebrated across generations.

“It was so spontaneous. It felt wonderful,” Ayers told The Guardian in 2017 about creating the track. “And I knew exactly how I wanted it to sound: a mix of vibraphone, piano, and synthesizer,” with congas, drums, and a hazy, nostalgic mood that evoked endless summer days.

That timeless sound has been reimagined by artists like Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and The-Dream, who have sampled Ayers’ work to create new anthems.

“It’s wonderful, the desire young people express for my music,” Ayers told Dummy in 2016. “It’s wonderful because I’m still growing in popularity.”

And grow it did. Beyond samples, Ayers collaborated directly with a new generation of artists, including Alicia Keys, The Roots, Guru of Gang Starr, and Tyler, The Creator. His delicate, distinctive vibraphone work also graced Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun (2000), adding shimmering layers to the track “Cleva.” Badu once called Ayers the king of neo-soul, crediting him with helping define its smooth, soulful aesthetic.

Over five decades, Ayers’ influence stretched across genres and generations, from working with Fela Kuti and Rick James to inspiring songs by A Tribe Called Quest and Pharrell Williams.

As pianist Robert Glasper summed it up in a 2011 interview:
“It just has a Roy Ayers sound. There’s nothing you can describe. It’s just Roy Ayers.”

George Lowe, the beloved voice actor best known for his iconic role in the long-running cult favorite Space Ghost Coast to Coast on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, died Sunday at the age of 67, his representative confirmed Tuesday.

A statement from Lowe’s family is expected soon. No cause of death was provided, though his close friend and radio host "Marvelous Marvin" Boone shared on social media that Lowe passed away following “a long illness.”

“I’m beyond devastated,” Boone wrote on Facebook. “My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me has also died. He was a supremely talented artist and voice actor. A true warm-hearted genius. Funniest man on Earth. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more.”

Tributes poured in from across the entertainment world. Casper Kelly, writer, producer, and director of Adult Swim’s Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, remembered Lowe on X, writing, “Wonderfully kind and funny man. Brilliant improviser. Art collector. Raconteur. Space Ghost was genius and helped usher in a new wave of oddball TV.”

Voice actor Billy West also honored Lowe, saying Tuesday on X, “He was mighty and one of the best of the best VOs ever. Very generous of spirit and very kind… and funny, funny, funny. He will be missed.”

“My heart is broken,” added Tim Frasier, an executive producer at iHeartRadio’s Premiere Networks, on Facebook. “George Lowe was one of the funniest people I’ve ever known and one of the nicest people to ever exist. You will be missed more than you know, my friend. RIP.”

Senate Democrats on Monday blocked a Republican-led bill that aimed to ban transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports at federally funded schools and educational institutions.

The bill fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance, with a 51-45 party-line vote, underscoring the challenges Republicans face in pushing major legislation through a closely divided Congress, despite holding narrow control of both chambers.

The Senate vote comes amid a wave of legislation in GOP-led states targeting transgender rights, including efforts to restrict transgender students from joining sports teams that align with their gender identity. Issues surrounding transgender athletes have become a central focus in recent Republican campaigns, including the presidential race, as the party appeals to voters concerned about gender and sports policies.

A similar version of the bill passed the Republican-controlled House in January with a 218-206 vote. Two Democrats supported the measure, and one voted "present."

The legislation sought to amend federal law to define sex as based solely on reproductive biology and genetics at birth for the purposes of enforcing Title IX in athletics. Title IX is the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive government funding.

Republicans argue that transgender women have a competitive advantage over cisgender women, which they say could limit athletic opportunities for other female athletes. Democrats, meanwhile, contend that such restrictions add to the discrimination already faced by transgender people, particularly trans youth, and accuse Republicans of targeting LGBTQ rights through legislation like this.

With 53 seats in the Senate, Republicans would have needed support from at least seven Democrats to overcome a filibuster and move the bill forward.

Carl Dean, the beloved husband of Dolly Parton for nearly 60 years, passed away Monday at the age of 82. Known for inspiring Parton’s iconic hit “Jolene” and for his lifelong preference to stay out of the spotlight, Dean died in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a statement shared with The Associated Press by Parton’s publicist.

A private service for immediate family will be held to honor his life. No cause of death was given, and the family has requested privacy during this time.

“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” Parton shared in a statement.

Dean and Parton first met when she was just 18, on her first day in Nashville, outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat.

“I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me),” Parton once recalled of their first meeting. “He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”

The two married two years later on Memorial Day, May 30, 1966, in a small, private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia.

Dean ran a successful asphalt paving business in Nashville and was the son of Virginia “Ginny” Bates Dean and Edgar “Ed” Henry Dean. Parton lovingly referred to his mother as “Mama Dean.”
